Confrontation between China and South Korea

Regional disputes in the modern League of Legends are more important, and in world championship tournaments they are elevated to the absolute. Worlds 2022 is no exception.

For many years, representatives of the LCK ruled the ball, but the situation changed in 2018. Invictus Gaming brought the title to China for the first time in 8 years, which gave rise to a new round of development of the competitive League of Legends.

In 2019, the Summoner's Cup went to China again. This time it was taken by FunPlus Phoenix.

South Korea only regained the championship in 2020 when DAMWON stopped the LPL teams from continuing their streak by outplaying Suning. However, by the next World Championship, the Summoners Cup passed to the team from the LPL LoL schedule: in 2021, the championship was taken by EDward Gaming.

At Worlds 2022, the cycle may continue. Of the four remaining teams in the tournament, three represent South Korea and only JD Gaming represent the LPL.

JD Gaming and Gen.G Gaming

In the context of the confrontation between the two leading regions of the competitive League of Legends, I would like to take a look at their best representatives. For China it is JD Gaming, in South Korea it is Gen.G Esports.

JD Gaming has a rather entertaining storyline at all. The Chinese team became the last LPL representative at Worlds 2022.

The logic is verified, as now the club is playing in the camp of the current LPL champion. It was JD Gaming who at LPL Summer 2022 became the strongest team in China, thus earning a place at the event. Such a factor can play an additional motivation.

Gen.G Esports is motivated too. This is where the facto T1 and the constant (until Worlds 2022) Gen.G being in the shadow of larger players on the world stage come into play.

The club acquired a League of Legends roster in 2018 and, in fact, immediately got from the ship to the ball. Since joining the League of Legends, Gen.G Esports have visited the Worlds three times, and the most significant was the performance at the past Worlds 2021.

The team is steadily gaining momentum: TOP-16 in 2018, TOP-8 at Worlds 2020 and getting into the top four at the last World Championship. Now we have every chance to see the trend continue: this year, Gen.G took 2nd place at LCK Spring 2022, and then won the South Korean championship from T1.

In a good way, the Worlds 2022 final will be the most “correct” when these clubs enter there. A potential clash between the LPL champion and the LCK leaves no one indifferent.

Faker and his way to the fourth title

If the prospect of getting aesthetic pleasure and practical skills after watching Worlds does not interest you much, then perhaps Faker will interest you? He certainly is able to draw attention to himself.

The South Korean player on the mid lane is, without exaggeration, a huge figure not only for the League, but also for eSports. The semi-finals of Worlds 2022 are a great opportunity to see what merits it has become so “large-scale”.

The most titled player of our time is close to a new absolute record. For Faker, the Worlds 2022 semi-final will be the sixth in his career.

The 26-year-old Korean does not think to stop there. It's hard to say that Lee is at his peak, but that doesn't stop him from performing at a high level in the game and being a strong-willed guide off the battlefield.

DRX, Deft and a Cinderella Story

It is impossible to talk about personalities this year without mentioning the South Korean colleague Faker. There is at least one other player at Worlds 2022 whose path is very interesting to watch.

As you might guess, we will talk about Deft, the DRX player in the ADC position. Kim Hyuk-kyu is playing a career tournament.

The last time the player reached the semi-finals was in 2014 and after 8 years he will re-enter the server in an attempt to break into the World Cup. But wait, is that enough for a separate mention? The mere fact of getting into the TOP-4 at the Worlds once does not make Deft special, but his path this year is like that.

As a member of the DRX, he had a very lean season in the home LCK. Together with his club, the player took the TOP 5 and TOP 6 on the LCK, and at Worlds 2022 he got into the last carriage of the outgoing train.

The tournament began for Kim Hyuk-kyu from the Play-In stage, where DRX, although they were the favorite of their group, had to face the giants Royal Never Give Up. They looked steadfast and deservedly passed to the next stage.

The DRX song at the group stage did not end, on the contrary, it received new motives. DRX made it to the playoffs from first place and continued to shine there.

The DRX matchup against last year's champions EDward Gaming will be one of the classic competitive League of Legends events of all time. The team showed a steely character, turning a 0-2 gap into a 3-2 win. The victory was especially bright for Deft.

As we already mentioned, this is the second time in the history of a player's career that a player managed to reach the TOP-4 stage. This already inspires respect, and add here the fact of the birthday of Kim Hyuk-kyu, who fell on the day of the match with EDward Gaming, on October 24, and we get a very catchy story.

The Worlds 2022 semi-finals will start on October 29 at 22:00 CET. T1 and JD Gaming will open the stage. We strongly recommend not to miss such an event.

The 2022 World Championship runs from September 29 to November 5 in Mexico and the United States. The Play-In stage will take place from September 29 to October 4 at the Arena Esports Stadium in Mexico City, and the group stage will take place from October 7-10 and October 13-16 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. The quarter-finals will be played at the same Hulu Theter from October 21-24, the semi-finals will be hosted by the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, and the final will take place at the Chase Center on November 5 in San Francisco. As part of the championship, 24 teams from all over the world are fighting for a total prize pool of $2,225,000.
