PGL Major Antwerp 2022 will be the third championship hosted by PGL and the second in a row after last year's PGL Major Stockholm 2021 (the Romanian operator previously hosted PGL Major Kraków 2017). Interestingly, at all previous majors held by PGL, a team from the CIS (Gambit and NAVI) won.
Dates of PGL Major Antwerp 2022:
- New Challengers Stage: May 9-12
- New Legends Stage: May 14-17.
- New Champions Stage: May 19-22.
Youth versus experience
PGL Major Antwerp 2022 will be the last chance for some of the best players in the scene. At the same time, the tournament will be visited by some young players who have appeared on our radars quite recently.
The oldest player in the championship is fnx (32 years and 4 months). The Brazilian is already a two-time world champion, but the tournament in Belgium could be one of his last chances to make history. The second oldest is karrigan (32 years and 1 month), which, together with FaZe Clan, is at its peak. Slightly behind Snappi (31 years and 11 months), for which the PGL Major Antwerp 2022 can become the main championship in his career. The top five of the overage players of the championship is closed by FalleN (30 years and 11 months) and fer (30 years and 6 months) from Imperial Esports, who, together with fnx, will try to find gunpowder in powder flasks.
The youngest representative of PGL Major Antwerp 2022 will be sk0R (16 years and 11 months). He is followed by m0NESY (17) who just celebrated his birthday. On the third and fourth lines are Zyphon (18 years and 3 months) and drop (18 years and 4 months) from Copenhagen Flames and FURIA, respectively, who, despite their youth, have already tried themselves at PGL Major Stockholm 2021. Closes the TOP-5 young Patsi players (18 years and 8 months) from Team Spirit.
The oldest and youngest teams
Not surprisingly, the oldest team in the championship is Imperial Esports, with an average age of 28.3 years. In this list, it is worth highlighting Team Liquid, which, "with the help" of shox, will perform at the tournament with an average age of 25.8 years.
The youngest team at PGL Major Antwerp 2022 is Team Spirit with an average age of 20.7 years. One year behind is Complexity, which has a value of 21.7 years.
Geography PGL Major Antwerp 2022
Players from 28 countries of the world will take part in the championship. Denmark and Russia can be proud of their representations, which will bring 20 players to PGL Major Antwerp 2022. Brazil has a serious squad, which will be represented by 16 esportsmen. There are much fewer participants from the USA, from which six players will perform at this tournament.
Among the countries that have not participated in the major for a long time, Mongolia stands out, which, thanks to the success of IHC Esports, will be represented by five players. Switzerland, Chile, South Africa, Norway, New Zealand, Montenegro, Finland, Estonia and Israel will present one representative each.
At the same time, Kosovo, Montenegro, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina will visit the major for the first time.
Championship debutants
Speaking of youth and geography, we must not forget about the debutants, who this time are enough to gather eight full-fledged teams. As we know, Bad News Eagles, Complexity, IHC Esports and 9z will debut at the Major. Almost in its entirety, this also includes MIBR, in which only chelo has experience of playing at StarLadder Berlin Major 2019.
BIG debutants will be faveN and Krimbo, while imoRR and xfl0ud will attend a major championship for the first time with Eternal Fire. PGL Major Antwerp 2022 will be the first for Maden from ENCE, as well as Farlig, blameF and es3tag. Seven representatives of Russia will make their debut at the tournament for the first time - m0NESY, Patsi, zorte, KENSi, Norwi, shalfey and S1ren.
As for teams, Imperial Esports, Bad News Eagles, Eternal Fire, Outsiders, IHC Esports and 9z will perform at the Major for the first time and receive their stickers. At the same time, Bad News Eagles and Outsiders do not have organizational support behind them.
Major tournament veterans
There are only three players left who have attended all 17 majors in the history of the scene - dupreeh, shox and Xyp9x. Interestingly, dev1ce and olofmeister have a chance to get into their number, but for this they will need to replace someone from NIP and FaZe Clan, respectively.
Additional fact: only seven players who took part in DreamHack Winter 2013 will play in the Belgian Major — dupreeh, shox, Xyp9x, karrigan, cadiaN, gla1ve and apEX.
MVP and Major Winners
Only two players received the Major MVP award twice - dev1ce and coldzera. But if the Brazilian has definitely lost the opportunity to overtake his competitor, then dev1ce still has purely theoretical chances to go down in history. True, for this, the Dane needs to take the opportunity to return to the NIP starting lineup.
The leader in the number of Majors won in history is Astralis (ELEAGUE Major: Atlanta 2017, FACEIT Major: London 2018, Intel Extreme Masters XIII - Katowice Major 2019 and StarLadder Berlin Major 2019). Slightly behind fnatic (three wins), however, the British club has already lost the opportunity to catch up with their Danish counterparts in this indicator due to the failure at the RMR tournament.
In turn, Virtus.pro, NIP, Coud9, Gambit, NAVI, SK, LDLC, Luminosity Gaming and Team Envy have one victory each.
