LCS Spring 2023: What to expect from the main stage of the title league
Yuriy SheremetThe LCS Spring 2023 play-offs will start in North America on March 23rd. The biggest event in the region by standards of the professional League of Legends will pit the 6 best teams in the region against each other in the first split of the new competition year.
The stakes are high with $200,000 in cash prizes and on top of that, two entries to this year's Mid-Season Invitational 2023 to be held in London. The top prize will be $100,000 and we'll find out who it will be in 19 days time on April 9.
The venue for the LCS Spring 2023: Playoffs will be the PNC Arena, with a capacity of 19,500 people and featuring top clubs Cloud9, FlyQuest, 100 Thieves, CLG, Evil Geniuses and Golden Guardians. And where an extra run of tickets had to be sold.
Ahead of the start of LCS Spring 2023 matches, here's an analysis of the North American League Spring Split main stage participants.
Cloud9 is the highest scoring team in North America, but there is also FlyQuest
The LCS Spring 2023 regular season produced many epic battles, but Cloud9 and FlyQuest were the main protagonists of the group stage. The pair combined for the highest score in the group stage and were logically placed 1st and 2nd.
The teams finished with identical scores of 14-4 each. Cloud9 took the lead with a win in the head-to-head encounter.
"Clouds approached the season with only one replacement after the failed Worlds 2023. The club's newcomer is South Korean international EMENES, who has been with the C9 Challengers youth division since November last year and it seems his move to the bench was fully justified.
However, even without EMENES, C9 have always looked confident at all times. Since starting at the 2013 LCS, C9 have been champions nine times in at least one split a year, the last one incidentally won in the summer of 2022, and C9 haven't missed a World Championship since 2013.
C9 are now the reigning champions and will want to be dethroned. The first contender to do so will be FlyQuest.
In the new season, FQ want to break the losing streak, stretching back to 2021 and all the prerequisites for this are in place, as they managed to finish the group stage on a high note, finishing second and securing a place at the top of the grid.
FlyQuest seem to have guessed the point replacements, as Eyla, who returned at the end of February, has shown almost the best efficiency in the team. The utility factor is 70, higher only for the Chinese legionnaire Spica.
In addition to C9 and FlyQuest, there will also be other, no less famous clubs fighting for the championship. Evil Geniuses, for example.
A repeat of Spring 2022: Can EG win the LCS Spring 2023 from the bottom half of the play-offs?
Evil Geniuses were one of the big discoveries of last season. The team managed to win the LCS Spring Split and then reach the top 4 of the Mid-Season Invitational 2023, before playing at Worlds 2022 where those "evil geniuses" made it to the top 14, which is already good.
Logically, EG should have had no problems in the regular season: The team retained the roster from last year, and only the coaching staff had changes. In reality, the "evil geniuses" had a very turbulent league, finishing in fifth place in the group stage, and leaving CLG and 100 Thieves behind in the replay.
Getting into the bottom of the playoffs will make it difficult to repeat last year's success and win the split: Back then, Evil Geniuses started at the top. The level of the performers, however, allows for a miracle-run, so we await the inclusion of EG on March 27.
